Oh definitely agreed, and when you think of his own personal history it's completely understandable that he would want to protect them. Though I think he seems to gradually come to accept they may have a place on the battlefield too. Sally helps him a lot I think, both with inspiring him and simply by being a strong competent woman who survives.
